Imtiaz A. Khan, PhD
Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine
Imtiaz A. Khan received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India, in 1983. Following his Ph.D., he worked as a senior resident in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Institute of Medical Sciences Kashmir. In 1986 he moved to the United States and was recruited to Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire as a postdoctoral fellow. Under the mentorship of Dr. Lloyd Kasper, Dr. Khan did some pioneering research on CD8+ T cell immunity against Toxoplasma gondii. In 1992 he obtained independent funding and was promoted to the rank of Research Assistant Professor and became Associate Professor at Dartmouth Medical School in 1997. Dr. Khan went on to be appointed as a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in 2000. In July 2006, he moved to George Washington University as a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine (MITM). Dr. Khan’s interests are focused on the development of CD8+ T cell memory response against intracellular pathogens like Toxoplasma gondii and Encephalitozoon cuniculi. He has collaborations with a number of renowned scientists in the USA and Europe.
Magali Moretto, PhD
Assistant Research Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine
Magali Moretto obtained her Ph.D. in Biology in 1998 from Francois Rabelais University in Tours, France. During her PhD, she studied the role of secretory IgA and gut mucosal plasma B cells after oral Toxoplasma infection. She then did her postdoctoral studies with Dr. Khan, first at Dartmouth University and then at Louisiana State University. Her specialty is gut mucosal immune responses to infectious diseases. Lately, she has been studying the role of intraepithelial lymphocytes during microsporidia infection.
